Premise
No one is interested in football in the
1920's, except with one superstar hero
the media has created. Combining the
"star" with new rules, pro football is born.
But is the fun still there?
Rating: Met
George Clooney directs his third film with such bravado that it is easy to be offended by it.
Clooney makes it look effortless, and people tend to frown on that. The thing is, a period piece
trying to resurrect a dead genre (screwball) and criticizing most of America (the pro football
loving crowd) deserves to be applauded for simply trying! Still, based on the quality of the movie
alone it is an entertaining romp. The movie is lighthearted with a message, maybe the hardest
thing to do when making a movie. All of the acting is top notch, everyone does good with their
role, and Clooney makes his 3rd good movie in a row. There are a few scenes and lines of
dialogue that fall flat but not enough to stop the momentum of a good sports movie with a heart
(there are many great scenes of dialogue). Scenes filmed in the mud are very interesting and
the period is well recreated. Unlike most sports movies though, this is not for the average
football fan - it's the thinking man's football bash!
