| At least In Brughes, despite obvious genre confines, is not overdone. There is subtlety and a willingness to defy cliches and dive deep into the characters. Each time a person is introduced, they are interesting, which is not always the case with "charming gangster" flicks. In Brughes rises far above the likes of Lock, Stock 2 Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Layer Cake, and any other since this kind of movie has been so in style since Pulp Fiction made it popular. The two hit men in this film are more like a father and son than just a wise and unwise duo. The screenplay is smart, the camera work is very true to the scenic location, and everything works along the merry way. It is rare that any movie that walks the line between funny and violent can turn out this poignant and true.
