| Coming out in the great movie month of January, Allen throws this little gem of a movie at the world by simply telling a tragedy. This movie is one of Allen's best "serious" pictures. It is a gritty, tense thriller that gets meditations on family and men/women relationships just right. Some characters change and grow up, some don't. Some start off evil and turn good, some vise versa. All the while, it is never boring and always entertaining. It makes every character (and there are about 10) well developed and interesting. Those who complain about it not achieving past greatness like Match Point and Crimes and Misdemeanors are missing the point - on it's own terms, the movie works perfectly. Besides, Match Point tried so hard to be "a masterpiece" and seemed so tired and worn out. This one, while also taking from the director's past (like Manhattan did to Annie Hall, did anyone complain about that?), seems effortless and rugged, like everyone is having a good time again. The actors are not flashy but they work so well because of this. It is a Greek tragedy, a homage to Hitchcock, and one of Allen's best.
