| My Favorite Links Rock Reviews Sites Piero Scaruffi This man is an Italian based music critic who knows more about the subject than anyone else working today. I can't say enough about Scaruffi; his impact on the world of music in undeniable and his website is indispensable. If you like music, do your self a favor and get a copy of The History of Rock Music, which provides insight on every single rock band to ever exist (who was worth any value) and while he may not go in depth on things you already know, he can tell you a lot of things you would like to know. He takes music very seriously (and should), but has a unique sense of humor too. The BEST music critic alive today in my opinion, or as he would say it, of ALL TIMES. (he also has reviews on many other subjects, from different types of music to movies and poetry, but I find his rock music part to be the best.) If he criticizes a band you like, don't let it stop you, because the man is hard on everybody. www.scaruffi.com Pitchfork This is a great site for new, independent music. They'll tell you when new bands are touring, have a nice cast of reviewers to look at the newest music, and compile everything from lists to news to interviews. Hey, that rhymed. The first place I go (though not the only one) for info on new bands. www.pitchforkmedia.com Scott Floman Scott Floman is a New Yorker whose site I came across while reading the Web Reviewing Community log (WRC), and I have been in contact with him ever since. Nice man, good with trading cd's, writes nice to-the-point reviews about Rock and Soul music, and he has a very unique style. My favorite WRC site because he sticks to his guns and is not afraid to say what he thinks. He's also a crazy list man, and that is a must in this business! www.geocities.com/sfloman/homepage.html Allmusic ROOKIES! Start here! Allmusic is where most people in my generation began their record collection journeys, and still one of the most comprehensive, accessible English language sites around (Scaruffi's review's are not all translated from Italian). Some great writers, Stephen Thomas Erlewine and Heather Phares are my favorites. Try your favorite band, then look at their influences, followers, similar bands, and biography, to better understand them. Then keep going and going and going, 'till you are worn out. Then sleep, get up, start again. www.allmusic.com Disclaimer Great reviewer, with short little reviews on mostly Indie bands. Will is a very nice guy too, and has a great range in music and a unique look to his site. Grades with the "letter system" and can point you in the right direction. I usually agree with him I'd say. www.disclaimerband.com/dmra.html Mark Prindle Mark's site is one of the funniest to read because he has a scatterbrained-psycho style of writing. Nice guy who loves punk music, though it is way more than just that. He covers tons of rock bands, and covers every single thing about them from the rarest EP to that bootleg live album you can never find. He has insane lists and contests (greatest 73 albums ever!) and also unique interviews with important music people. www.markprindle.com Adrian's Album Reviews English chap who has a unique site and good opinions. Probably the guy who I disagree with in reviews the most of all these sites, but also respect because we have very similar tastes in music and ideas. I wish my site looked near as good as his too, not too shabby. www.adriandenning.co.uk/albums.html Jack Fenny Nice English dude who gives insightful, detailed reviews. If you really want to learn about the artists posted on his site, just read the reviews. He might be the most detailed rock music reviewer on the web, but the reviews are always well written, even if I differ with his opinions sometimes. www.jackfeenyreviews.com Pop Kulcher Mark Fagel's site was one of the first review sites I ever got into. His site is divided into his weekly blog, his many mix tapes, and his unique "50 greatest albums of all time" list that is complete with artist discographies. Very unique site, and one of the very best out there. http://home.comcast.net/~popkulcher/ Cody Gaisser This dude writes his opinions on music and poetry, reviews in a unique almost chapteresque way, and is also one of the coolest guys ever. We always get together and make fun of current pop trends, compare lists, and argue over which is really better: corn meal or craters. Oh, and somebody please tell this man that Third/Sister Lovers by Big Star is not one of the top 5 albums of all time. www.codygaisser.com Fast N' Baulbous Probably the most confounding site to navigate that is worth going to, let's just say the Beefheart reference fits. Crazy lists, detailed opinions, second only to Scaruffi for sheer volume of material. www.fastnbulbous.com/index2_f.htm Cokemachine Glow Recently developed site that is a joy to read, and hey, its named after Gordon Downie's first solo album! That's what attracted me, but what made me stay was the good content. www.cokemachineglow.com/archives/index.html Metacritic A very necessary site that tallies up at least seven different reviews of newer albums, and puts it into a single, universal rating. As good or better than Allmusic for looking up new releases, and it will only be more expanded and valuable in years to come. www.metacritic.com/music Rate Your Music Before I had this site, I used Rateyourmusic all the time. Completely user choice, and a nice way to make friends with similar tastes across the world. You get to rate any album you like, write a review about it, then post it so all can see. You can also make lists or just spend all day reading lists. Essential site that proves the power of the Internet in getting opinions known. www.rateyourmusic.com - to come: Movie sites. |
